A.  Speaking, Conversing & Listening Comprehension 

Using a variety of teaching materials in interactive group classes of no more than 8 students, we will teach you everything you need to speak and understand Mandarin.  In addition to a solid foundation in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, we emphasize conversation and listening comprehension practice. 

 B.  Characters

Because we believe early exposure to characters (in addition to pinyin) is vital to a true understanding of Mandarin, we begin introducing students to characters at the beginning level of their language study.  By the time they finish the beginner level, students will have been exposed to 30-50 characters.  After the intermediate level, students will know approximately 300 characters.  This means that serious students will be able to read basic Chinese at the level when most schools are just beginning to introduce students to characters!  We also offer a twice-weekly “characters only” class for students interested in accelerating or improving their knowledge of characters.

 C.  Chinese Culture

Finally, we incorporate lessons in culture, teaching students about Chinese cultural events, history, and geography.  Taking into account the students’ level of familiarity with China, a typical lesson might focus on Chinese etiquette, the significance of certain holidays, or how the Chinese name their children.  At the advanced levels, students will learn more about the history and geography of China.  We believe your time in China will be more meaningful and your language study greatly enhanced by an understanding of China and its people.   

• We focus on speaking and listening, with students using more than 60% of class time to speak.  After every 10 hours of lessons, we supply customized audio and written materials to our students to help them practice and correct their pronunciation outside of class.
• We offer accelerated learning of the most practical daily Chinese.
• We are grounded in Chinese traditional culture and history, such as Confucius’s golden rules.
• We incorporate other useful tools into lessons, such as Chinese songs, movies, TV programs, newspapers and magazines.
• We focus on pronunciation and tones.
• We introduce students to characters relatively early in their studies.
• Our teachers embrace a friendly approach, willing to help students work through any difficulty.
• Using a storytelling method, students can learn to use the language in a relaxed and lively manner.
• We incorporate the latest topics of Chinese people’s daily livef into each lesson.

We offer morning and evening group classes. Private lessons , with a two-hour minimum requirement. Incoming students can test into different level of classes. Students who refer their friends to Capital Mandarin receive a discount for each friend who enrolls!

Chinese level estimate and price

Students are required to take an oral test so that we can arrange classes to correspond to each student's Chinese level. We will also happily plan classes around students' schedules to suit their particular professional and personal needs. 

Levels 1 & 2:
Morning class—3-hour classes, 3x/week (72 hours)
Evening class—2-hour classes, 2x/week (2 36-hour long sessions)
Typical class structure (including two breaks):
Conversation, grammar, and vocabulary—90 minutes
Listening Comprehension—15-20 minutes
Pronunciation—10 minutes
Characters—30 minutes
Culture—10-15 minutes

Levels 3 & 4:
Morning class—3-hour classes, 3x/week (72 hours)
Evening class—2-hour classes, 2x/week (2 23-hour sessions)
Typical class structure (including two breaks):
Conversation, grammar, and vocabulary—95 minutes
Listening Comprehension—15-20 minutes
Pronunciation—5 minutes
Characters—30 minutes
Culture—10-15 minutes

Level 5 and above

Typical class structure (including two breaks):
Conversation, grammar and vocabulary—100 minutes
Listening Comprehension—15-20 minutes
Characters—20-30 minutes
Culture—10-15 minutes
Chinese movie—1-2 times/month

Missed classes-catch up:

 -Make-ups will not be provided for students who miss one or two classes in a row.
-Students who miss three or more classes in a row will be allowed to make up 1/3 of the missed hours, as long as they have given 24 hours prior notice.
-If the student misses two weeks or more of class and gives the school 24 hours prior notice, there are two ways to catch up:

1. The school will arrange a tutor to catch up 1/3 of the student’s missed hours.
2. The student can join another class of approximately the same level to complete the balance of the entitled hours at a later date.

Note: The make-up classes may be provided by a different teacher and may be held at a different date and time than the regular classes.

Elementary Level 1:

Elementary Level 3:

About 280 key sentence patterns.

Elementary Level 4:

Book:《Intermediate Spoken Chinese Ⅰ》published by Peking University Press
Vocabulary: About 2000
About 380 key sentence patterns

Elementary Level 5:

Vocabulary: about 2500
About 500 key sentence patterns

1. Be able to use Chinese language freely;
2. Comfortably discuss social problems;
3. Completely express opinions in a paragraph with fluent and correct words and grammar;
4. Do some easy translation jobs;
5. Read long articles in the newspapers and magazines with a speed of less than 130characters/minute;
6. Make a composition of less than 600 characters within two hours with a clear topic;
7. Be able to recognize about 1500 Chinese characters

Elementary Level 6:

Vocabulary: about 3000
About 600 key sentence patterns

Elementary Level 7:

Vocabulary: more than 4000
More than 700 key sentence patterns

A developmental report after every 20 to 30 hours of lessons will allow students to keep track of their progress.  However, students can get personalized feedback from their teachers at any time.
