Spring Festival
The Spring Festival is the most important festival in China, beginning on the first day of the first lunar month, usually in January or February.  As with Christmas in the West, it is a time for family members to gather together, making it the busiest time of year in terms of transportation.  Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with people returning home for the holidays to be with their families.
The Spring Festival celebration begins a few days before the first day of the first lunar month and generally lasts about 15 days.  The most important days are Spring Festival Eve (similar to New Year’s Eve) and the first three days of the new lunar year.
There are many customs associated with the Spring Festival.  On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make “laba” porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with different kinds of seeds an rice.
On the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, people used to offer sacrifices to the kitchen god.  Now however, most families just make delicious food to enjoy themselves.
